MCWD: Back From The Abyss (a case study)

September 11, 2010

I'm a loser, baby.        So, why don't you kill my Google rankings.

I admit it, wereally let mcwd.com slide over the past 2 years. We had a Google PageRank (PR) of 5 for over 6 years and #1 for "nashville web design" since 1996... and we took it all for granted.

WHERE OH WHERE DID MY PAGE RANK 5 GO?

We had clients all over the place asking for backlinking, and it wasn't unusual for our PR5 backlink to bring a PR1 or 2 site up to 3 or 4 in less than 10 days. But we committed the mortal sin of allowing our site to become stale. We haven't added any notable content since 2008, when we completed the Drive Big Trucks (DBT) SEO project.

LOST FOCUS

Ok, so we increased our focus on our own e-commerce projects to the point where we haven't taken on new clients since 2006 (with the exception of DBT) - yay for us. We're like a home builder who built so many rental properties that they eventually stop building spec homes entirely. We also started www.FixMyPlaystation.com as a spinoff of one of the shopping sites, which took so much time to manage that we really weren't looking forward to adding more to our plate with design work. But in the middle of all this we totally neglected the site that started it all... mcwd.com.

Requests for project bids became more scarce in late 2008, as the economy dipped. Eventually becoming almost non-existent. Still we remained in the top 5 positions of Google's page 1 results for "nashville web design". But then, we just stopped paying attention.

Fast forward to September 9, 2010. Where the heck are we?

We're selling Fix My Playstation and focusing on our online stores and pursuing other design possibilities, so I check up on ole mcwd.com....

SAILING OFF THE CLIFF LIKE A STALE FLOUR TORTILLA FRISBEE

Nice... Google had us squarely in the catbird seat of position #83 for "nashville web design". Cue muted trumpet game show loser riff. Also cue the bottomless list of lost opportunities that have marched past our door over the past 2 years. Well, who knows what marched past... but it's better to be in the arena than not.

There are few things Google despises (and punishes) more than stale websites. So we decided to put our blogging where our homepage is. All the design/seo/ppc experience in the world isn't worth anything if you don't share it with the web. Enter our (I promise) never ending web blog. We started with 2 posts yesterday.

2 BLOG POSTS... that's all.

Today we're up 56 positions (that's 5 search result pages) to #27 on page 3!

Needless to say, the blogging continues.

Stay tuned for further developments... and get back to your own blogging!

UPDATE : September 29, 2010
We're up to #20 on page 2 for both "nashville web design" and "nashville website design".
